After The Post Office

Service Design Breif for RSA

The problem with the post office is not limited to rural communities, the Post Office operation required a radical re-think. When a service is closed, there is a new service in its place. At present, it is planned that 2500 rural post offices are closed; but with 19% of people are moving from small towns and rural areas into the City, less people are staying in rural areas for these post offices to serve these communities.

Gone are the days when everyone knew their local post office workers, or even know where their nearest post office is. It is easy enough for people to go online and find their nearest post office. But in today's society we do not want to spend time finding out where the post office is, we want to just be able to go to it.

This proposal is to reduce the amount of UK post offices from 13956 in October 2008 to 6210 in just over a year, with the introduction of more centralised city based post offices and simple way finding that blends into the city environment. These new post offices will be in grander more prominent locations, bringing credibility and grandeur to the Post Office name, the buildings will be easily accessible for those who have to travel to them and offer services from posting letters and parcels, banking and insurance to the modern communication tools of the internet.
